The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a remarkable salamander native to Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls remain aquatic their entire lives, keeping their larval features through adulthood — a phenomenon called neoteny. What makes axolotls truly extraordinary is their regeneration ability. They can regrow entire limbs, heart tissue, spinal cord sections, and even parts of their brain — all without scarring. Scientists study them extensively in hopes of unlocking regenerative medicine breakthroughs for humans. Sadly, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution, though they thrive in captivity and research labs worldwide.
